Transcript (a crude one): Hi everyone, i had a crazy experience let me tell you about it.You all know about the earthquake in Chile, right? Well, i've been traveling around south america, in ecuador, argentina, urguguay and chile. well, my first night in santiago...first night, what happened? yea, that earthquake. i've never experienced an earthquake before. so that was a new experience, let me tell you about it. i went to bed, i was really tired. i slept, dreamed, whatever. suddenly i woke up. i was really confused and disoriented. i could feel my bed shaking. i thought maybe it's just a tremor but it kept going and my bed was shaking more and it was stronger. i couldn't see anything so i got up and went out into the hallway and stood in a doorframe. those are the safest places in a house during an earthquake and the whole house shook. it continued for more than one minute. that's really long. i could hear glass shaking and then falling on the floor and breaking and also furniture moving across the house. i couldn't see but i could hear the house shaking. i was so scared. then everything was calm. i could hear dogs outside, people, car alarms. i looked at my watch it was like 3,30 3,40. luckily my house had little damage. other houses had it worse. santiago was very far from the epicenter (about 200 miles) but other cities like valpariso and concepción were damaged badly. teh quake started a lot of tsunamis so a lot of littler towns are flattened. it's awful. a lot of people still don't have water, food, electricity or means of communication. i have friends who can't communicate with their families to know if they are alive and safe. it's really awful. as of right now there are 708 deaths. that's a lot. it was an 8.8 but in santiago where i was it felt like an 8. that's still pretty strong. that got me thinking of the recent earthquake two months ago in haiti. that one was a 7.0. chile's 8.8 had 708 deaths and haiti's 7.0 had what? 200-300 thousand? i don't know. all of haiti was destroyed where as in chile the people are ready for an earthquake, haiti no. right now we need support both chile and haiti. we need to think about poverty and governments. earthquakes are not a question of natural disasters but poverty. i was just thinking about that. really scary. i'm still feeling aftershocks every one to two hours. they start to freak me out but it's nothing. ok well i just wanted to share that experience. really scary but also exciting. ok bye!

Mar 1, 2010 - Glad that you're ok. I've heard other people say that the duration of the earthquake felt like an eternity. Been following this story since it broke, and after it became obvious that the amount of devastation in Chile was far less than Haiti, I had similar thoughts to you... it's about infrastructure, social services, and communication... or, yes, the extent of impoverishment. Sadly, if things don't change, then the future for the poor people of the world is only going to become even more dire
